Ban Vicodin? Pain Patients React

tylenol_136.jpgiVillagers on the Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue message board reacted to the news of a federal advisory panel's vote to ban Percocet and Vicodin.

"I'm so tired of the government 'helping' me stay safe. What, exactly, are we supposed to give our patients after surgery when they go home? What are we supposed to take when we have to get a tooth fixed or can't get out of bed due to pain? I realize that there are a lot of people abusing these drugs, but I'm certainly not one of them, and neither are all the people who have chronic, debilitating pain. There are no alternatives without Tylenol added, so if this goes through, it will leave us with nothing," says Mcpayton.

"I just spoke to my doctor about this," says dogandcat99. "He said the little bit that's in Vicodin is not going to cause liver damage. Even the amount in Tylenol is not going to cause liver damage. I asked about this because I seem to take a lot of Ibuprofen with the pain from my tendinitis and ear issues and he said it's fine. He said the media is just overdoing the study."

"There needs to be a rational approach to this. Banning effective pain meds that lots of people use after something like a root canal, post-surgery, after an accident, chronic pain conditions and even during cancer treatment is absurd, " says cl-littlemascara, who signed the American Pain Foundation petition urging the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to protect the rights of people with pain.

I am sick and tired of this government telling me what I need and don't need. I have several forms of arthritis and no healthcare!! I am in pain daily. IF any of these yahoos were in my shoes they would be making these drugs available like candy!! I take my meds sparingly --get liver panels done and am quite content to trade off one risk for yet another!! There are days when it is very hard to get out of bed and go to work....when is the media and the government going to realize that ordinary everyday people have very little choice about their health these days??

It's about time that the public took some responsibility for their health.
If they read labels on otc's and ask their Pharmacist or Doctor questions it would greatly help the problem.
Is the government going to ask sugar be taken out of foods so diabetics can eat healthier and keep their blood sugar lower?

Like Terri, I am tired of the government telling me what I can have and can't have. I have osterarthritis and psoriatic arthritis and live in pain 24/7. The oxycontin just takes the edge off my pain so I can function semi-reasonably. There are many things I still cannot do. If the government takes away my only source of pain reliever I don't know what I will do to ease my pain so a can function. I am allergic to several of the other pain relievers, that is why I ended up on oxycontin in the first place. So far you have taken away my Vioxx which worked and talked about taking away my Celebrex. Please leave my Oxycontin alone.

I take percoset for pain and also for severe radiation damage to my bowels which helps the constant dirahrea, after many years of trying to find something that would help, I sure do not feel the goverment should have any say in this or try to take it away from anyone, until you live the health life of a sick person just pay attention to your own life, we know the risks with these medications and are willing to take the risks if the medication helps us, if you read the side effects on any medication you may take you just might not take any of them, leave us sick people alone!

There is an alternative to percocet...percocet is oxycodone 5 mg with acetaminophen 325mg. If your doc is concerned, they can order oxycodone 5mg tabs. That's what i take, same as percocet with no tylenol. And the government needs to mind their own business. We have anough trouble getting support from the docs we see, now THEY are going to step in and validate all the negativity suurounding narcotic use???? That's total BS, I hope it can be stopped.

I am so tired of the government making rash decisions to help the stupid people who are misusing medications at the risk of taking them away from those of us who are using them correctly and need them to live a quality of life that is unattainable without them. I live in pain at a 8 or 9 level even WITH pain meds 24/7 and do not want to know what I will feel like without meds to help me through my days. Government get out of the medical office and let the doctors decide what is right for the patients!!!!

I agree with Richard. If people would only realize what they are putting into their bodies to begin with they would things in moderation (hopefully) and know that too much of anything is never a good thing. So if we watch what and how much we put into our bodies we wouldn't have to worry about studies and the government interfering with our pain medication. Soon we will not be able to manage our pain and we will be in worse condition with our healthcare system than ever before as every thing will be illegal and no one will be able to work. Boy our government sure knows what it is doing

I would like to see one of these people from the FDA live with unrelenting chronic pain everyday of thier lives, then they can say if these very life giving drugs should be taken off the market. I bet not of one of them would last the day, never mind a lifetime. Viocodin and Perocet are the 2 most widely perscribed medication that help people who live with unrelenting chronic pain everyday. Do they even know what this means. Pain 24 hours everyday never stops, never goes away. These medications don't take it away but they do help to make life bearable and for most of us make our lives productive and livable. Let them live this pain first before they make their stupid decisions. This country needs to stop being medication peranoid. It is way past time. Stop trying to make us safe by taking away our right to live our lives. By doing this they are sentencancing very many people to an unbearable life. They are causing many people to probably look for any way to relief the pain which could be much worse for them. They need to think and do research with people who need these medications on a daily basis. We take them, we live with the, we do not have kidney damage from them. Stop interferring in our lives, where they do not belong. It is time the goverment for once stopped using fear to control us. What kind of free country do we live in when fear is used to control us. It is time to stop. These are my diseases and my pain. I should have the right to choose what I take to help me control the pain. No one else has the right to tell me I don't. Last time I checked this was still a free country, not one dictated by fear that the goverment is trying to control us by. I want one person from the FDA to walk in my shoes for a day and tell me if they can stand the pain and live like this with no medication no help due to fear. Get real. Try asking the people for their vote. The people do not and would not approve. How dare they even attempt to do this. For the good of who, the FDA not the people of this country.

The government has no right to tell us that we have to suffer in agony because there are drug addicts out there , and stigmatizing the rest of us is just plain cruel and outrageous . I have peripheral neuropathy , and I'm in terrible pain 24/7 . I also have severe arthritis ,and many other chronic illnesses . If it weren't for my pain Dr , I would be suffering unbearably right now ; he is responsible for my having quality of life now , at least my pain is managed so that I can function better than I could before .I fired my internist because she treated me like I was a drug addict, told me to go off my drugs ,they didn't help PN ! I'm tired of people like me being treated like common druggies . I wish they could feel our pain enough to know what we are suffering !

I too a sick of anyone interfering with my medical care. Ive dealt with chronic pain 15 yrs. i lost my business of 20 yrs, i lost everything because of the mindset we have to deal with yet now again. i have my pain meds and am back working some. I was a very successful person who lost it all because if ignorant mindset. here it come again. Not only do we fight the government, we fight non-pain people who love to judge, and or be your friend just to ask for your meds. I now have a disease that i have to stay silent about.I have a routine to function, if the government now interferes{ what a wasted study} i will fight with everything i have against the ignorant study. I finally have gotten just back on my feet. In Dermatology, antibiotics is the only treatment for acne. Are you taking that away too. Drs only have so much to work with. And i might add i was not this bad until i finally agreed to back surgery. they destroyed a nerve. but if medicine is held back until you do what the drs want, you have your choice taken taken from you. just to keep my business, i needed 1 prescription a month, Now i need 3 to function, and lost my business. So you see the medical society is a fight and creates these problems, They do not care if you lose you livelihood, there are government programs. And if you take our medication, the government supporting people will skyrocket! Its a lose lose.

I live in Washington state and the only alternative to pain relief or MD's in pain management is steroids injected into the spine, which for me do not work and I have a really bad reaction to steroids, period...Physical therapy, a positive attitude, meditation and alcohol, which doesn't help much, and is pretty bad for the rest of your body...I was in the emergency room last night after my latest bout of sciatica, just got worse for 5 days I have been laying in my bed, in pain barely able to walk...I could go one and on about this and you would think that either I am a drug addict, or crazy, because even my neurosurgeon refuses to give any pain meds to anyone until after a surgery, and then it's limited...The ER doctor gave me a lecture about pain meds, and asked me why I didn't go to my doctor or neurosurgeon...He did finally gave me a shot that made me really sick, although it did relieve me of some type of pain med and a small prescription of vicoden, small doses for three days...He said that the hospital has changed it's policies because of all the drug abuse. I was told that they do not give out pain meds to people like me who have a chronic pain condition, but since it had been months since I have been to the er they would give me enough to get into my doctor...I told him that this was really not right to punish people who are in pain because of the ones who use drugs for recreation and are not in pain..He said that, well tell that to someone when they are doing CPR on a 16 year old, who dies from pain killer overdose...He actually made me cry, because I was exhausted overloaded, sleep deprived and in pain, because it is very sad...But the pain medication is not the reason for the problems with drug abuse, anymore than a gun is responsible for the use of guns in murders, or knives...With this kind of logic that the objects are responsible, then alcohol, guns, knives, ropes, clubs, cars, tire irons, anything, razor blades should all be banned because they can be used to kill others or kill oneself...He told me that my pain is not life threatening, and I said it is, if you have intense pain that goes on for days, weeks or more it can have a impact on your health and even possibly drive you to suicide...I know I have been there, where I felt so helpless and desperate, in pain where I have decided to end it all if I couldn't get any relief from it...He said in that case I would be put in the psych ward, and I said, well at least they would probably give you something for the pain, I doubt that they would deny you if you have a documented condition that causes extreme pain...Really who are the insane here, obviously this young doctor has not experience severe chronic pain...Maybe that's what they need to learn to listen to be empathetic, and use higher reasoning skills instead of this illogical logic that it's all about the object not the person who uses the object...The drug abuse problem is a social psychological problem, there are many lost, hopeless, apathetic youth, and adults out there who are turning to drugs and or alcohol to ease their emotional pain...Antidepressants, and the wide source of psychiatric drugs, do not work well, if they work at all...The side affects can turn people into the walking dead, give them permanent neurological damage, and they are not able to function, have a real life...Well the same can be said for people in chronic pain, who are not being treated by something that actually is affective on pain...I have tried everything, including cymbalta, which did nothing, for my pain, although I think it dulled my mind, to the point that I am surprised I wasn't drooling...I lost my life years ago, as my spine has degenerated, stenosis, arthritis, in entire body has made my life hell...I live in poverty on a income that no one could live on in the US, maybe in India I could have food, utilities etc, but not with the over inflated, rent, utilities, gas, food, etc in the good ole USA...I have no help, I cannot lift much, when I do, even 15lbs is a pain risk for me..I can be crippled for weeks and months, if I make a stupid move or lift too much...I have other health problems including asthma, all my life, chronic bronchitis, which they call COPD....I was diagnosed a long time ago after a car accident with fibromyalgia, but most doctors don't believe in it...I was told my pain was "All In My Head" to stop complaining, get back to work, get a life by my doctor 7 years ago...Which prompted me to get an instant second opinion at the minor emergency center next door, they were kind enough to order an MRI, which at least put me on the right path to the reason of the intense pain...I have had neurosurgery on my neck a year ago, it was extensive, my spinal cord was severely pinched, I had to lay in bed not moving my neck in severe pain for days with horrible headaches, until I finally got a more recent MRI, and then they gave me pain meds, a month and half before the surgery, my neck was basically floating, not being held up by the spine...I get no empathy, no understanding, nothing, just crap, I look ok on the outside, I am not elderly, but I know elderly people who are in better shape than me, my physical problems are documented, I feel that my life offers no future no hope, and I need to have an alternative plan in case all comes crashing down...I will not live in intense pain if that's all that I have left, I will kill myself, it's better than suffering day after day, being treated like your a drug addict, when your not...This ER doctor also said that people who are depressed feel pain more and don't handle it as well, this is like the chicken or the egg coming first theory, pretty faulty, he's telling me that I am in pain because I am depressed or unhappy, or somehow that happy people do not feel pain...This is pretty illogical and pretty crazy thinking to me....With this logic, maybe the ER doctor could lay hands on me, and if I believe in Jesus, or click my ruby slippers three times all will be well...Living in intense pain day to day is a horrible way to live, I think they want the sick the chronic pain people to die, it will free up social security money...People in the US are more humane to animals, they wouldn't expect an animal to suffer like this and in this wonderful state, they just voted in the right to the terminally ill to get assisted suicide....I had reservations about this because of the big possibilities that a terminally ill person may feel obliged to die earlier for the financial survival of his/her families, or be pressured or guilt tripped into it... My neuro surgery on my neck has not helped the way I hoped it would, after a year since the surgery I am still in pain, I have nerve pain in my hands, and muscle spasms in my neck and arms, that I live with daily and I have mild to moderate sciatica daily, it hurts to sit for too long, stand or walk for too long, it keeps me handicapped mentally and physically...The neck surgery at least minimized the pain, It's nasty, but not as intense as it was before the surgery...And I am suppose to have surgery on my lower back, the neurosurgeon told me it's really bad, got much worse, I told him that I know that...But I have been trying to postpone the surgery, the last one took me so long to recover from, I had no help, under medicated for pain, and then a week after, I got some thing, that almost killed me...I couldn't stop vomiting and had severe diarrhea for two weeks, went to the hospital twice for IV's of fluids, couldn't keep anything down, pills to ease the nausea or stop the diarrhea, even rectally...I thought it was the end...So now we have the new deal depression, our society is falling to pieces, people are not as kind when they are being pinched by the economy...So all the cuts in social care, meds health care could even get worse than they are and the invisible handicapped chronic pain people, who have to live on a meek social security income, with no real hope of being able to work again, and no money or family to help, like me are doomed... I have been told that marijuana might help by people I know, but there is no way I could smoke it, but I hear they have pills, or tea or something like that...But I doubt that these sadistic, cruel physicians, and government types would allow me to legally get that...In this state they put people in prison for using it, even for pain...Washington state is the West coast Alabama, it's economy has been depressed, for a long time, and their answer to drug abuse is to jail anyone who can't pay their way out of it, with lawyers, hospitals, fines, and to punish people who are truely in pain call them addicts because they ask for pain medication...It's insane, I hate this state, and am a third generation Washingtonian...The rich or wealthy never have to deal with this kind of treatment...

You people that want it banned, and have no pain need to get hit head-on like I did, and go through a year and a half of surgeries like I did--- WITHOUT ANY PAIN MEDICATIONS AT ALL!!!!!! LOL! Amputation fully awake you morons?

It has been a known fact that acetomenophen in large doses
is extreemly toxic to the liver.I am a layperson not a scientist.NOW they finally decide to remove the real crap from the pain meds.Look all you on Vicodin and Percocet the real pain killer in those meds are the Opioids 5mg of Hydrocodone and 5mg of oxycodone both available in tablets alone without the other if you want acetaminophen you can buy plain Tylenol and im sure none of us chronic pain patients have ever used plain Tlenol for any real pain Maybee the physicians now will begin to treat pain a bit more serious. We have the technology MEDS

I am a health care professional with severe neuropathy and cannot sleep at night without percocet 1/2 pill 5/500. These meds are stereotyped in such a negative light that im scared to death that i will have to spend my elderly years in pain. If they ban these medications, there is no hope. And yes ive tried every kind of alternative medicine imaginable. There is a reason opiates work so well. Drs need to pay attention to there patients and stop the over prescribing to those who do not need these medications.

The medicines that are used for bone pain are narcotics findrxonline as opioids such as Vicodin, Lortab, OxyContin, hydrocodone and the doctors that are usually used to combat pain they cause diseases such as homeopathy, fibromyalgia and even cancer In general, these medicines are used mostly is the United States and Europe are controlled because their use can lead to addiction.

Nobody is free of cancer, hopefully soon find a cure and to fight this disease now, because it is tedious to go to therapy all the time and drugs to treat the disease are very strong opiates as vicodin, Oxycodone, Lortab, Norco medicines too high in codeine and acetaminophen considered hallucinogenic drugs, as indicated in findrxonline then imagine how much pain, really hope there will be a solution as quickly as possible for this .....
