A study released on Tuesday reported that teen pregnancy is on the rise for the first time in a decade. Even worse, that news comes on the heels of a study that found one in four teenage girls has a sexually transmitted disease (STD).

How is this happening? Some people say sex education isn't going far enough, while others say all this sex talk is practically giving our kids permission to do it. Do we focus on teaching kids about safe sex or should we encourage abstinence?

There is a lot of talk about it on the iVillage message boards.

"I think abstinence during teen years is definitely a good thing to teach, but not preach."
-- adamsmumma

"Fact is, most teens are too irresponsible, immature and emotionally unevolved to well and truly handle all of the consequences surrounding sexual relationships, up to and including pregnancy. With that in mind, I think there's nothing wrong with encouraging abstinence. It IS the best way and only full proof way to avoid unwanted pregnancies, STDs, gossip and social stigma surrounding early sexuality."
-- chaoticchemistry

"Seems to me that another factor in the teen pregnancy rate is the bombardment of our children with the message that they need to be sexually desirable in the media. Starts early and doesn't seem to let up."
-- jabberwocka

"Even having a marriage certificate doesn't make you ready for a baby," warned one teen mom. Read what else she has to say.

What do you think? How can we reverse teen pregnancy and STD rates?

recall of four batches of H1N1 baby shots--800,000 shots in all. It was not
clear how many of the vaccines had been administered before the recall went
out.

The good news is that the recall has nothing to do with safety,
but concerns a small dip in vaccine potency that health officials say is no
cause for worry.

All vaccine makers hold back samples of each lot they ship and
over the ensuing weeks, test samples to ensure that their potency remains high.
At the time of this follow-up testing, the lot samples in question had dropped
below a predetermined limit. And, so, the recall.

How might this affect your child's protection against H1N1?

Not at all if your child is age 3 or older or was immunized
with either the nasal-spray vaccine or the type of injectable vaccine packaged
in multi-dose vials (the type used at most flu-shot clinics).

The recall involved only thimerosal-free baby shots in
prefilled syringes.

But even babies and toddlers who received one of the sub-par
shots will be fully protected so long as they complete the two-dose
immunization regimen recommended for all children under age 10, says Anne
Schuchat, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory
Diseases. (These two doses are administered approximately one month apart.)

So writes Pamela Mahoney Tsigdinos in her book Silent Sorority the story of her journey through infertility, and finally her coming to terms with childlessness.

At 46, Pamela is two years older than me. Like me, she is coming to the end of her reproductive years, which for both of us were scarred by infertility treatments and failures.

I have never met Pamela, but she contacted me a few weeks ago and asked me to read her book. I doubt she knew my story. Over my years of infertility I have honed my journalistic skills into an expertise in reproductive medicine - writing for both physicians and the public. But I rarely write about my personal battle.

Pamela wanted my comments on her book - which I gave her. But I also took a risk and shared my story.

It was a risk because, while my journey through infertility was very similar to Pamela's - my road branched away from hers when I finally conceived. I am the mother of a 13-year-old girl - our one success in a string of failed treatments, both before, and again after she was born.

This huge difference weighed on my every word when I wrote to Pamela. "While I feel that I can relate to your history, and even to your present, I realize that this really can't be so. So please, take what I have to say knowing that I know I am poorly qualified to say it," I wrote.

Poorly qualified, yes. But not unqualified. I know that from her position, carrying the grief of involuntary childlessness, having her pain compared to that of someone who struck the jackpot and got pregnant must seem like a cruel joke. I get it. But yet, we do share much in common.

While I am blessed with motherhood, and she is not, we both have broken dreams. As she writes, we had both "spun buoyant, cotton candy plans" for our futures - which included normal conceptions and several births. I got the one birth, for which I am eternally grateful, but my daughter's conception was high-tech, expensive and painful. And for some of those who knew me back then, my angst-ridden quest for motherhood was so strange and foreign - they couldn't relate.

And still, to this day, sitting in a room full of other mothers, I realize sometimes that I feel alone. I am a veteran of a war they never fought. I am an "infertile mother" - a strange concept, an oxymoron.

Pamela's book was hard for me to read. It brought back a lot of the pain of infertility - the unfinished business that she writes about.

Now, I am facing some of that unfinished business - the end of my reproductive potential - the end of pregnancy hope - just as a new milestone is reached in the world of infertility.

Last month the World Health Organization recognized infertility as a disease - a huge step forward for those of us who have experienced this ambiguous loss.

As William Gibbons, MD, President of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine so aptly stated, "For too long those suffering from infertility have had their condition slighted or even ignored. Insurance companies don't pay to treat it, governments don't put adequate resources to study it and consequently patients suffer. We hope that this international recognition that infertility is, in fact, a disease will allow it to be treated like other diseases,"

Pamela's book offers rare insight into what Dr. Gibbons describes - how infertility patients often feel slighted and ignored. They are the silent sorority whose suffering is often very isolated because the fertile world cannot relate. Whether our personal journeys end with a child, or with childlessness, the fact that the war we fought has finally been recognized by society offers validation of our suffering.

Silent Sorority is a brave book and a gift to all infertile women, whatever stage of the journey they may be on. While it is mostly about Pamela's struggle with infertility, the final chapter is about her settling with it. This is the chapter that brings me peace. "In a way, this book was your labor, and the last chapter was a birth - or rebirth," I told her.

Pamela also shares her thoughts on infertility on two blog sites: Coming2Terms and Barren Not Beaten.

of the national vaccination campaign have gotten louder. The overall death rate
from this pandemic strain, they point out, has so far been lower than that seen
with seasonal flu.

What unadorned mortality numbers don't show, health
officials counter, is this pandemic's tremendous toll in "life-years" lost.
This is because H1N1 continues to strike hardest among children, young adults,
and pregnant women, while largely sparing the elderly.

This is not to say an older person's life is not precious.
But a death of a young person results in many decades of life lost. This
contrasts with the months to years lost from the life of the frail, elderly
patient who is the typical fatality from seasonal flu.

"Already there has been three times the number of deaths
among children than we would see in a usual flu season," CDC director Thomas
Frieden noted during this week's H1N1 media briefing. And the usual winter flu
season has just begun.

Pregnant women remain of particular concern, with a 10 times
higher risk of life-threatening complications when compared to the general
population. Understandably, these complications (pneumonia, septic shock, organ
failure) also threaten a woman's pregnancy.

Nonetheless, two weeks of declining H1N1 infections is good
news indeed. Even if there are more waves of H1N1 infection in store, this lull
comes at a time when communities are finally getting enough vaccine to begin
expanding immunization beyond high-risk groups.

More good news comes with the CDC's announcement that
monitoring for vaccine side effects is showing no spike in the incidence of
Guillain-Barre Syndrome. This rare autoimmune condition became more common during
the 1976 swine flu vaccination campaign.

Influenza experts continue to hold their breath over the
possibility that H1N1 could yet grow more dangerous by either mutating or recombining
with a more deadly cousin such as the H5N1avian flu circulating in Asia.

Even if H1N1 does change in ways that make it more deadly,
those vaccinated should remain protected, Frieden says. The part of the virus
used to make the H1N1 vaccine is distinct and independent of the portion that
changes when influenza viruses become more lethal.

I know that sounds stupid since we need food to live, but I feel like I can't say no to food and my life revolves around it. I feel like an addict.

I started dieting and exercising about a week ago, and every day is a struggle not to just grab something and eat it until I'm stuffed.

I realize I need to make a lifestyle change and I need some support. When I talk to my friends about struggling with dieting and saying no to sweets, they seem to sympathize but I don't think they get it.

I think I need professional help, but as a single mom, I simply don't have the time. I really do want to be healthy-for me and my baby. I don't want her to grow up like me. Any advice would be great.

--marie1st

A: I'm glad you are reaching out for help. You really do need it - and you're not alone. We all struggle with saying no to food, in different degrees. Yes, we are all "food addicts" because we have to eat, you need some strategies to get some structure in your eating, and become what's called a "mindful eater". You always want to think before you eat. Eating is both about the food and the behavior related to it. While I am sure you know an apple is a better choice than a slice of apple pie, it's a real struggle for you to resist. So, I'd suggest you join a structured program on-line, like Weight Watchers, with a lot of 24/7 support (there is a fee). Or, at no charge, is Overeaters Anonymous, that works for some people. One thing for sure - you can't do this by yourself, to get started.

For starters, get a notebook and write down everything you eat, and a note about how you're feeling when you were eating (hungry, bored, upset, just tasted good, etc...). See if there is a pattern in your eating. Instead of sweets, which you say are tough for you - try some frozen cherries, right out of the freezer. Think of fruit, which is nature's candy. Veggies are a go-to "free food". With some structure and help, you CAN succeed in managing your eating and your weight.

GREAT for you that you recognize this - and don't want your children to share these habits. With effort, and extra support (which you DO need - not your friends, who can't seem to support you here - but others struggling with their weight) from the right people, you will make progress.

Let me know how you are doing. Just take one step at a time!

Dr. Paul Walters and his team from the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London followed more than 11-thousand asthma patients for 10 years and noticed they had a 63% increased risk of developing depression compared to people without asthma.

They also noticed that the depressed asthma patients made more trips to the doctor each year compared to asthma patients who weren't depressed.

I've written before about how difficult asthma is to treat, and how more than half of asthma patients struggle with poorly controlled symptoms. No wonder many of them get depressed, and keep going back to their doctor!

As an asthma sufferer myself, I can relate to this frustration. I have what doctors call "mild, intermittent" asthma. The label says it all. It's mild when it's there, which is not all the time. In fact, many people who know me would never suspect I have asthma. But, occasionally - usually about twice a year - if I get a cold, or allergy symptoms - my asthma goes from mild to severe, usually ending in bronchitis or pneumonia.

This pattern has become so predictable that I recently went back to my doctor, just like so many other asthma patients, to see if there's anything else I can do. All the standard asthma tests gave the same diagnosis: mild, intermittent disease - which didn't really surprise me, since I knew I was not sick that day. But it was frustrating to be offered no solution.

This disconnect between doctors' tests and patients' experience with asthma may explain the high rates of depression and doctor visits among asthma patients, Dr. Walters told me.

Doctors use objective measures like the peak flow rate to get a picture of asthma severity, but tests like this may not tell the whole story.

"You could have very mild asthma from the doctor's point of view, but from your point of view it could be severe," he said.

In fact, I first wrote about this phenomenon a few years ago after meeting Dr. Christopher Carroll.

As a pediatrician at the Children's Medical Center in Hartford, Connecticut, Dr. Carroll noticed that even children with mild disease can have such severe flare-ups that they end up in the hospital.

Over a 9-year period, more than half of the children admitted to intensive care with asthma exacerbations had "mild-intermittent" disease, according to his study.

While Dr. Carroll believes adult asthma may be different from children's, he is convinced that the current approaches "may not fully capture the spectrum of asthma." In other words, a patient's "everyday" asthma may bear little resemblance to their potential for severe flares.

"Personally, I think that we need to pay more attention to exacerbations and try to better define types of exacerbations," he told me last week in an e-mail. "The same patient may have very different types of exacerbations based on different triggers/etc, and I don't think we have a good handle on predicting who is going to get acutely ill from this disease or when these exacerbations will occur."

Like Dr. Walters, Dr. Carroll believes depression is linked to asthma. But, he asks, is it a cause or an effect?

It was a surprising discovery, he said, with the first clue in one of his previous studies which revealed asthma was the third highest reason for antidepressant use in the UK. "We suspected chronic illness would be linked to antidepressant use, but not specifically asthma," said Dr. Paul Walters, from the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London.

In his latest study, Dr. Walters followed more than 22-thousand asthma and non-asthma patients over a 10-year period and found that asthma patients were 63% more likely to develop depression, and 87% more likely to die.

Those numbers are worrying, but not completely surprising. Many chronic illnesses are linked with depression.

What's less well understood is why that might be.

Dr. Walters' team suspected it might have to do with severity of illness. Asthma patients with particularly bad symptoms might understandably be more prone to depression because they feel so unwell. But, after looking at his study results, he didn't think that was the case.

He noted that depressed asthma patients used roughly the same amount and type of medication as the non-depressed asthma patients - suggesting that asthma severity was the same in both groups.

But the surprising, and unexpected finding was that depressed asthma patients made significantly more trips to their doctors each year, than non-depressed asthma patients.

Why would that be?

The researchers are still looking at this question, but, as an asthma sufferer myself I'll tell you what I think they'll find.

Asthma is hard to treat. As I wrote in a previous blog, less than half of asthma patients have their symptoms under proper control.

That's because there is no one-size-fits-all treatment, and if the treatment doesn't work for you, or doesn't work well, you are going to head back to your doctor looking for something better. When all other treatments have been tried, without the results you want, you may very well be depressed - so prescribing anti-depressants may be justified. But meanwhile, the asthma symptoms continue. Next week I'll write about why asthma treatments may not always produce the desired results.

proven controversial among people who remain uneasy about immunization.

In essence, adjuvants grab the immune system's attention to
generate a stronger protective response.

In gearing up for the H1N1 pandemic, World Health Officials
asked developed nations to use adjuvants to stretch the vaccine supply to cover poorer countries. By generating a stronger immune response, adjuvants allows vaccine
makers to use less "active" ingredient--in this case destroyed H1N1 flu virus--in each shot or squirt.

But while most European countries and Canada said "yes" to
the WHO request, the United States said "sorry." Why?

U.S. flu vaccines have never included adjuvants. So using them
would have warranted further safety testing, and that takes time. In other words, by making H1N1 flu shots in the exact same
way as seasonal flu shots, U.S. suppliers were able to deliver a fully safety tested vaccine in under 9 months.

Alternately, the U.S. could have introduced adjuvant-containing flu vaccines on an "experimental" basis, based on their safety records in other countries. But U.S. polls showed that a majority of Americans wanted none of that.

Science journalist Jessica Snyder Sachs is the author of Good Germs, Bad Germs: Health and Survival in a Bacterial World.
